OUR SHOWCASE

KENWOOD MASTER BATHROOM

In July, 2008, The Remodeling Company partnered with Jo Harding of Jo Louise Designs to remodel the master bathroom of Russ and Linda Kenwood.  After putting their ideas together and settling on a “bamboo” theme, Jo introduced the Kenwoods to our company to carry out the design.

Foreman John Talley was responsible for the remodel as well as overseeing the tile, plumbing and electrical subcontractors.  In keeping with the “bamboo” theme, there were several special order items incorporated into the bathroom including a shaded light fixture and the sink faucets seen in the photo.  These special order items tend to have elongated lead times.  This requires the Foreman to properly time the order and delivery of such items in conjunction with all aspects of the job, as John did here.

  • The homeowners decided to keep the original vanity which was updated with a new color/finish and hardware.
  • A new, quartz vanity top was added with vessel sinks and specialty faucets.
  • The small wall cabinet above the vanity was removed to allow extra recessed lighting and a set of framed mirrors above the sinks.
  • The fiberglass shower unit and framed glass door were removed.  They now have tiled shower walls and floor, and a new frameless glass shower door.
  • The toilet was also replaced with a comfort-height commode.

Designer, Jo Harding, describes the process:

As you entered the Kenwood Master Bathroom earlier this year, it felt pleasant, light, and airy with its beige and white hues, and its large bay window over the centrally located whirlpool. There was nothing worn out or broken, just a slightly dated dé cor and not a lot of “wow.”

After a few meetings to determine what the couple hoped to achieve in this space, and hours and hours of making selections on everything from paint to tile, to hardware and plumbing fixtures, to counter tops and new knobs, to new mirrors, to well, the not-as-exciting toilet and grout selections; today, it is an entirely different room.

We warmed it up with a chocolate brown quartz vanity top, and across the room, (visible in the two offset mocha-colored bamboo custom-framed mirrors), we opted to remove the old molded acrylic shower unit and replaced with a floor to ceiling chocolate brown large-square tile and infinity doors barely trimmed out in bronze. The two above-counter slightly square sinks in white, accompanied by very dramatic, tall, bamboo vessel fillers in bronze. The whirlpool’s original brass waterfall filler and the hot and cold water controls were re-coated with a bronze finish, while the new rain showerhead and controls are in bronze as well. To complete the slightly Asian feel of the bath, touches of bamboo were added in the form of vases filled with dried stalks, a hand painted chest, a bronze wall light fixture with bamboo shades; and to finish, a “whisper” of blue paint was applied to all walls and the ceiling. The result--fabulous! And definitely a quiet, Zen-like, beautiful wow.

Thanks to the Remodeling Company, Roger Walker of Renaissance Paint, and Rick Smith at the Frame Shop & Gallery, etc., etc., Without them I could not have made it all happen! Jo Harding, Jo Louise designs! Newport News. Landscape & Interior Design. 757.814.0043.
