ADDING A SUNROOM AND REMODELING A KITCHEN FOR THE RASH FAMILY
A first-story sunroom addition and a remodeled kitchen brought this Newport News home up to date while also conforming to the lifestyle of its homeowner. Mrs. Rash has a green thumb that she wanted to put to use indoors, as well as out. This would require a “change of space” with a few bonus features.
First began the demolition of the existing rear deck to make room for the added sunroom and a new adjoining deck. Shingles and cedar siding were selected to match the existing home. Since the homeowner spends a lot of time with her hands in the dirt, a mudroom connects to the sunroom on the opposite end of the deck’s location. Complete with a set of storage cabinets, full-size sink, and an easy to clean tile floor, the mudroom provides the new rear entrance. Including a powder room in the sunroom’s space increased the home’s number of bathrooms. To keep with the natural light of the sunroom, windows were added in the mudroom and powder room.
Since the kitchen’s rear wall had to be removed to make way for the sunroom, this proved the perfect opportunity to remodel the 1970’s style space. New cabinets, countertops, appliances, lighting, vinyl flooring, and an elongated island rounded out the remodel. Even though the kitchen’s layout remained the same, it is hardly recognizable after such a transformation!
